LEARN MOREABOUT OXTON HC

The Club provides players of all ages the opportunity to play, and develop hockey at all levels.

Oxton Hockey Club was founded in 1888 and is one of the oldest clubs in Cheshire, and indeed, within the north of England.

During this time the club has gone through many metamorphoses, adapting to the changing landscape that is a progressive and competitive sports club.

However, our vision remains the same – to provide opportunity for players of all ages and levels to grow, develop and enjoy sporting excellence.

We pride ourselves on offering a welcoming and inclusive environment, for players to enjoy our sport.

Potted History

After great success in the 1950’s and 60’s, the club slipped somewhat in the late 70’s and 80’s. Investment in a youth policy and the club’s joint venture with the nearby Birkenhead School to build its own artificial-turf pitch revitalised the club during the 1990’s.

In 1997, the clubhouse at Oxton Cricket & Sports Club was opened after a massive fundraising effort and with the aid of National Lottery support. This coincided with the start of ladies’ hockey at Oxton. In 2009 with the declining state of the Birkenhead pitch, the club made the move to relocate its provision to use the Calday Grange Grammar School pitch. Enjoying an enhanced relationship with both Calday School and the adjacent Caldy Sports Club has allowed us to secure a new home venue. The relationship with the school strengthened further with the culmination of a joint venture and large financial investment to re-lay the pitch at the start of the 2024-25 season and secure the future of Oxton Hockey Club for many more years.

Men’s Section

Since the club’s formation in 1888 the men’s teams have enjoyed many successes, including but not limited to: winning the HA Trophy in 1993, the Cheshire U21 Cup in 1997, the Cheshire Vets Cup in 1999 and the first ever National 2nd team cup.

That success has continued for Men’s 1st XI in the last 15 years with a historic victory over National league side Bowdon to clinch victory in the 2012 Men’s Cheshire Cup. This was followed by their first jaunt to the National League with promotion in the 2016 season. Sadly, on this occasion it was a fleeting visit to the higher echelons of the hockey leagues, only to enjoy the same success again in 22-23 with an impressive +100 goal difference securing promotion from the Premier Division up to the National League. After three seasons in the National League Conference North, 2026/27 sees the M1s back in the North West Premier Division, meanwhile the rest of the Men’s section provides hockey across a range of levels with M2s competing in the highly competitive Div 2, whilst the M3s look to push for promotion to Div 4, and the M4s and M5s (Development team) enjoy success in Div 6 – meaning there’s a level of hockey provided for players of all ages and abilities at Oxton HC.

Ladies’ Section

From its formation in 1997 Oxton Ladies 1st XI enjoyed great success from the outset winning 7 successive promotions reaching the North league. The section endured a slight dip in the early 2010’s only to bounce back in the 2018-19 season, when all 4 ladies teams enjoyed promotion. Since the restructuring of the areas in 2021 the Ladies 1s continue to enjoy success in Div 2 south, whilst L2s play in Div 4, and L3s and 4s (development) play in Div 6.

Juniors

We remain committed to developing alliances with local schools and continuing to offer junior hockey at all levels – we are currently investing in the Talent Centre Scheme through England Hockey to further strengthen our coaching provision for juniors and the wider playing community.

More information on the hockey we offer to juniors, can be found on the junior pages of our website. But if you require any more info, please do not hesitate to get in touch via our contact page.
